What is actually happening

Japan does not hide its depth. It simply never translated it.

The good shop has no English sign, because in ninety years it never needed one.
The festival is four hundred years old, and nobody wrote it down for you.
The menu is a wall of characters, and the owner is waiting for you to speak first.

Nothing here is locked. There is simply no door in your language.

Most people treat studying Japanese and seeing Japan as two separate hobbies. That split is why both of them stall.

Twenty words of the right kind will open a shop you have already walked past nine times.

Not perfect Japanese. Twenty of the right words, and the nerve to use them.

History here is not a museum activity. It is the reason the street bends where it bends.

Once you know why, the same view stops being the same view.

That is the entire trick, and there is nothing mystical about it.

A convenience store at 2am is as real as a temple.

If a place is good, you will be told exactly where it is.

It is not mysterious. It is specific. Specific can be learned.

You need enough, not perfect.
