Why this site exists

The deep Japan is not hidden.
It is just unreadable.

You have been here five times. Ten times. And you still have the feeling that you are standing just outside something.

What is actually happening

Japan does not hide its depth. It simply never translated it.

Nothing here is locked. There is simply no door in your language.

So language and place are not two subjects. They are one.

Most people treat studying Japanese and seeing Japan as two separate hobbies. That split is why both of them stall.

Twenty words of the right kind will open a shop you have already walked past nine times.

Not perfect Japanese. Twenty of the right words, and the nerve to use them.

Why history keeps coming up here

History here is not a museum activity. It is the reason the street bends where it bends.

Once you know why, the same view stops being the same view.

That is the entire trick, and there is nothing mystical about it.

What this site will not do

It will not say “the real Japan.”

A convenience store at 2am is as real as a temple.

It will not guard secret places.

If a place is good, you will be told exactly where it is.

It will not tell you Japan is mysterious.

It is not mysterious. It is specific. Specific can be learned.

It will not wait until your Japanese is good.

You need enough, not perfect.

I want you to stop being a visitor to the surface of this country.

Just by being able to read what is already in front of you.

There’s more to Japan. Not further away — deeper in, right where you are standing.
