“Do you have a point card?” — how to answer at a Japanese konbini
Almost every convenience store clerk in Japan asks “ポイントカードはお持ちですか?”. Say “あ、持ってません” — and why the little “あ” makes it sound natural.
The clerk says
ポイントカードはお持ちですか?
Do you have a point card?
You say
あ、持ってません。
I don't have one.
What it means
- 持ってません
- = I don't have it
It means: I don't have one.
What's「あ、」?
That little "ah!" at the start? It's just like saying "oh!", and it makes you sound more natural. But it's optional. Without it, everyone will still understand you perfectly.
Say it slowly
あ、持ってません
