“What brings you in today?” — answering 今日はどうされましたか at a Japanese clinic

At clinics in Japan, reception asks “今日はどうされましたか?”. Answer by trailing off: “熱があって…” (I have a fever) or “のどが痛くて…” (my throat hurts). Not finishing the sentence is how people really say it.

The reception says

今日きょうはどうされましたか?

What brings you in today?

You say

熱ねつがあって…

I have a fever…

What it means

  • 熱があって = FEVER
  • のどが痛くて = THROAT

The first one means I have a fever. The second one means my throat hurts.

Good to know

Notice you don't finish the sentence. In Japanese, trailing off like this sounds soft and natural.

Say it slowly

熱ねつがあって
