“Do you need a bag?” — answering 袋はご利用ですか in Japan
At registers in Japan, the clerk asks “袋はご利用ですか?”. Two answers, you choose: “お願いします” (yes, please) or “そのままで大丈夫です” (it's fine as it is). Bags cost a few yen, so many people bring their own.
The clerk says
袋はご利用ですか?
Do you need a bag?
You say
お願いします。
Yes, please.
What it means
- お願いします = YES
- そのままで = NO BAG
The first one means yes, please. The second one means it's fine as it is, no bag.
Good to know
Bags cost a few yen in Japan. So lots of people bring their own, and say the second one.
