“プレゼント用ですか?” — answering “Is it a gift?” at a Japanese shop
At a shop register in Japan the clerk may ask “プレゼント用ですか?”. Say “プレゼント用です” and they'll wrap it, or “自分用です” (it's for me). 〜用 just means “for”.
The clerk says
プレゼント用ですか?
Is it a gift?
You say
プレゼント用です。
Yes, it's a gift.
What it means
- Gift → they wrap it
- For you → just a bag
Say it's a gift, and they'll wrap it for you. Say it's for you, and it goes straight into a bag.
Good to know
That last part simply means for. For a gift. For me. Easy.
Say it slowly
プレゼント用です
